Sun Ra Arkestra is a U.S. free-jazz ensemble that emerged during the mid-1950s. Initially centered around Sun Ra, the Arkestra has undergone various incarnations and remains active today under new leadership. The ensemble has released numerous albums, many of which were published as Sun Ra albums, despite being full Arkestra recordings. The current lineup includes notable musicians such as Marshall Allen on alto saxophone and flute, who joined in 1958, and Michael Ray on trumpet and vocals, who joined in 1978. Other members include Fred Adams, Knoel Scott, Vincent Chancey, and Danny Ray Thompson, among others, with members having joined at various points from 1962 to 2015. The Arkestra is known for its innovative contributions to the free-jazz genre and continues to perform and record, keeping the spirit of Sun Ra's vision alive.
