Sunny Okosun was a Nigerian singer, guitarist, and composer, born on January 1, 1947, in Enugu, located in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. He passed away on May 24, 2008, in Washington DC, USA. Originally known as Sonny, he added the final "s" to his surname in adulthood and was referred to by both names. A self-taught guitar player, Okosun formed a covers band called the Postmen, also known as the "Local Beatles," at the age of 17 in 1964. He visited London in 1965 with a theatre group for the 1st Commonwealth Arts Festival. However, the Biafran war in 1967 led to the dissolution of the Postmen and a relocation to Lagos with his family. In Lagos, he briefly worked in television before moving to Benin, where he joined Victor Uwaifo's Melody Maestros as a second guitarist in 1969. In 1971, he formed his first professional band, Paperback Ltd., which he disbanded in 1974. He then formed another band, Ozziddi, in 1976. Okosun gained widespread popularity in West Africa during the late 1970s and early 1980s, achieving international attention through collaborations with Eddy Grant, particularly with the album "Fire In Soweto," which featured the hit title track.
