**Bio: Surf Teens** The Surf Teens were a band formed by brothers Jeff and John Hammond, along with Greg Smith and Tony Johnson. Jeff, at 16, played lead guitar, while 13-year-old John was the drummer. Greg, also 16, played rhythm guitar, and 20-year-old Tony was on bass. Their journey began when the mother of Jeff and John contacted a former saxophonist looking for new acts for his label. Intrigued, he traveled to Atascadero, California, where he discovered the band performing instrumental rock and roll in their garage. Impressed by their talent and youth, he booked them for a performance at Pismo Beach on July 12, 1963, for which they earned $25. The following night, they played at the Atascadero Lake Pavilion and received $50, eventually earning $100 for subsequent performances. Under his guidance, the band learned covers from other artists and recorded a single titled "Moment of Truth" b/w "Moonshine," released on Westco WC-9 in limited numbers primarily for promotional purposes. They later recorded more material at a studio in Watts, where many surf bands were recorded.
