Surface was a three-piece soul vocal group formed in the mid-1980s by songwriter David Townsend, multi-instrumentalist David “Pic” Conley, and lead vocalist Bernard Jackson. The group initially worked as staff writers for EMI, creating songs for various artists. They achieved chart success in 1987 with their hit “Happy” from their debut album, "Surface." Following this, they released a second album titled "2nd Wave" in 1990, and in 1991, they put out "3 Deep" along with a greatest hits compilation called "A Nice Time for Lovin'" in 1992. Afterward, Townsend and Conley shifted their focus to songwriting. The group made a comeback with the album "Love Zone" in 1998 and announced a reunion tour for Summer 2005, alongside plans for a new album. Tragically, David Townsend passed away on October 29, 2005, at the age of 50 before the album could be completed.
