Surghjenti is a musical group founded by Noël Valli in 1979, showcasing the cultural identity of the extreme south of Corsica. The group released four albums during its initial run, concluding its performances in 1988 at the Cité Festival in Lausanne. In 1991, Surghjenti reemerged with four new members: Guy Canarelli, Pascal Morandini, Marc Biancarelli, and Jean-Paul Mangion, two of whom were former members. The group's current musical exploration focuses on both vocal and musical aspects, characterized by their rich and clear voices that reflect the uniqueness of southern Corsica. Surghjenti performs in various venues, including a cappella in churches and cathedrals, where the acoustics enhance their ancestral voices. Their repertoire includes both sacred and secular polyphonies, as well as original compositions. Today, Surghjenti's distinctiveness stems from their exceptional vocal potential, creating a powerful and vibrant musical experience that revitalizes Corsican music. Their lyrics embody the open spirit of a new generation dedicated to preserving a living culture, gradually moving away from militant songs towards a more poetic perspective.
