Swans is a band from New York City, originally active from 1982 to 1997 and reformed in 2010. Founded and led by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira, Swans was initially marginally associated with the no wave scene, characterized by a slow and extremely heavy sound, best exemplified in their live album, "Public Castration Is a Good Idea." As they progressed, particularly with the twin albums "Greed" and "Holy Money," their music began to speed up, incorporating more prominent drum machines and samples. During this period, Gira was joined vocally by Jarboe, which expanded the band's sonic range. After disbanding in 1997, Swans reformed in 2010. A significant change in the reunion was the absence of Jarboe, resulting in tonal differences between their post-reunion albums and their earlier work.
