She was the youngest of five children and grew up in the Sugar Hill section of Harlem before moving to the North Bronx after a fire destroyed their home. Sylvia developed her love for singing at an early age, creating songs on the family piano and performing in recitals after taking piano lessons. She began her professional singing career as a teenager with neighborhood friends Gus Falcon and Malcolm Ballinger. After high school, Sylvia attended the City College of New York in Harlem, where she received acclaim for her performance in the college production of *Anything Goes*. In the 1970s, she worked as a backup singer and later auditioned for the role of Dorothy in *The Wiz*, ultimately becoming the second understudy and later performing the role in the road company production, which toured several major cities. During the late 1970s, Sylvia joined the group Aquarian Dream and collaborated with vibraphonist Roy Ayers in his group Ladies of the Eighties, recording an album with each. Ayers signed her to his Uno Melodic record label, where she released her extended single "Give Me Your Love" and her first solo album of the same name. Her song "You Can't Turn Me Away," featured on her solo album, gained popularity by being included in *Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories
