System 7 is a UK-based techno and ambient outfit formed in 1990 by Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy. Both were previously key members of a pioneering psychedelic space rock collective in the seventies, and Hillage had also released a series of influential solo LPs, including a notable ambient album. With the rise of the underground dance music movement in the UK at the end of the 1980s, Hillage and Giraudy decided to fully embrace this new wave of electronic music. Rather than remaining a simple duo, System 7 has maintained a dynamic project by collaborating with a variety of artists, including members from The Orb and many others. As highly proficient programmers and mixers, System 7 stands out as one of the few ambient/techno acts to incorporate guitar, drawing on Hillage's background as a psychedelic rock guitarist. At one point, the band used the name System 7 to avoid conflicts with Apple's computer operating system. While albums like 1994's release were already ambient, they later created another project to explore the chilled and downtempo aspects of their music.
