T. Rex, initially a British psychedelic folk duo, was fronted by guitarist/vocalist Marc Bolan (born Mark Feld) and Stephen Porter (born Stephen Porter). They became pioneers of glam rock and shortened their name to T. Rex in 1970. The band achieved a series of top ten hits in the UK, including four number one singles. In the United States, their major hit was "Bang a Gong (Get It On)." T. Rex maintained a following until Marc Bolan's death in 1977.
