Tabou Combo is Haiti’s most famous musical group, formed in 1967 by musicians Albert Chancy Jr and Herman Nau in a small church. Over the past 30 years, they have toured worldwide, earning the title of ‘ambassadors of Kompa,’ the popular Haitian dance rhythm sung in French, English, Spanish, and Creole. The group gained early recognition by winning the Radio Haiti award for ‘Best Musical Group of the Year’ in 1969. They moved to Brooklyn in 1970, where they played their first New York show, marking the beginning of a long international career. Tabou Combo's music is designed for the dancefloor, blending Haitian Meringue, Rara, Kompa, and influences from Brazilian music, soukous, and funk. Their popularity has given them a significant role in Haitian society, using their lyrics to advocate for the poor and denounce the oppression of black people. They are dedicated to improving their country’s image and have founded the association “Manger, lire et espérer” (Eat, Read and Hope) to address hunger and illiteracy in Haiti, fostering hope for better days.
