Taku Sugimoto is a Japanese guitarist, cellist, and composer born in Tokyo on December 20, 1965. He began playing guitar in high school, initially focusing on rock and blues before developing an interest in free jazz, European free improvised music, and avant-garde classical music. In 1985, Sugimoto co-founded the improvisational psychedelic rock band Piero Manzoni, alongside bassist Masaki Bato. The band disbanded in 1988, after which Sugimoto engaged in solo performances and session work, releasing his first solo LP, Mienai Tenshi, in 1988, characterized by a big, heavy sound. In 1991, he started playing cello and dedicated the next two years to this instrument, forming Henkyo Gakudan with alto saxophonist Hiroshi Itsui and guitarist Michio Kurihara. Their music was described as high-volume improvised chamber music. Sugimoto briefly joined the psychedelic rock band Ghost in 1993 and the avant-garde classical music group Hikyo String Quintet in 1994. After releasing his cello solo CD Slub in 1994, he decided to give up the cello. In 1994, Sugimoto and another musician launched their guitar duo Akiyama-Sugimoto.
