Takuya Kuroda is an emerging trumpeter and composer, recognized for his dynamic presence in vocalist José James’ band in recent years. The 33-year-old musician, originally from Japan and now based in Brooklyn, has been leading his own bands and has self-released three albums. While touring with James in support of the singer’s Blue Note debut, No Beginning No End, Kuroda shared some of his new material with James, who appreciated it and encouraged Kuroda to emphasize hip-hop and R&B influences in his music. James expressed, “Make sure you have something in the music that makes people bob their heads.” Kuroda's unique sound has earned him praise from James, who noted, “No one sounds like Takuya. His tone, warmth and most of all his storytelling have inspired me for years.” Kuroda's writing is described as soulful and modern, seamlessly bridging jazz and soul, as well as the past and the future.
