Tangerine Dream, founded in 1967 in Berlin, is a pioneering group in electronic rock music, particularly known for their contributions to the Berlin School. Starting with a free-rock approach in the early "Krautrock" scene, they evolved into a synthesizer-based trio, significantly influencing the introduction of electronic music to the Western rock audience. Their spacey, pulsing sound garnered a dedicated cult following during the mid to late 1970s. However, by the late 1970s, their lineup and musical direction shifted towards more conventional rock. The initial lineup featured Edgar Froese, along with members on cello and drums, and their first release, "Electronic Meditation," showcased experimental improvisations influenced by London psychedelia. Following this, key members departed, with Klaus Schulze going on to form another significant group in the Berlin School. The addition of long-standing member Peter Baumann marked a new phase, and the trio of Froese, Franke, and Baumann signed to Virgin Records in 1973, releasing "Phaedra," which defined their style for years. After Baumann's exit in 1978, Tangerine Dream experimented with their sound on "Cyclone," introducing vocals and woodwinds. The lineup remained stable until the mid-1980s, when an increased emphasis on sequencers and rhythm divided fans. They briefly collaborated with a new member from 1984 to 1988 before signing to Baumann's label and later another New Age label
