Tashif Kente, born Mzwandile Kente, is the son of the late Mtutuzeli Gibson Kente, known as 'the father of Township Theatre.' He grew up in Rockville, Soweto, and initially gained recognition for his role in the musical "Mama and the Load." Tashif also played bass guitar for the G-Kays, a backing group for the stage play "Hard Road." After a period of collaboration, he embarked on a solo career in 1984. His debut album, "A Boy and a Dream," was released in 1991 under the name Tashif on Tusk's Diamond label, featuring various artists. He dedicated this album to his grandmother, Nonzophi Ellen Kente.
