Tatsu Yamashita is a Japanese singer-songwriter and record producer, born on February 4, 1953, in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, Japan. He is heavily influenced by American jazz, soul, and big band music. His first album, which featured cover versions of songs by The Beach Boys and other classic American songs, is now extremely rare and sought-after. Yamashita made his major debut in 1976 with an album recorded in New York and Los Angeles, which included the participation of a conductor and arranger. His popular breakthrough came in 1980 with the release of a single that peaked at #3 on the Oricon singles chart. This song was featured in a Maxell TV ad for audio cassettes. Yamashita is perhaps best known for his 1983 song "Christmas Eve," which appeared on his album of the same year and was covered by another artist for the Japanese release of their album. A version with English lyrics was written by a frequent collaborator of Yamashita. In addition to his music career, he is known as a record collector and the DJ of Japan's famous oldies radio show, "Tatsuro Yamashita's Sunday Songbook," which started on October 3, 1992, as "A Saturday Songbook" and changed to "The Sunday Songbook" on April 3, 1994. This long-running program is still ongoing. Tatsu Yamashita's daughter is Minako Yam
