Tatsuro Yamashita is a Japanese singer-songwriter and record producer, born on February 4, 1953, in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, Japan. He is heavily influenced by American jazz, soul, and big band music. His first album, which featured cover versions of songs by The Beach Boys and other classic American tracks, is now extremely rare and highly sought-after. Yamashita made his major debut in 1976 with an album recorded in New York and Los Angeles, which included the participation of a notable conductor and arranger. His breakthrough came in 1980 with the release of a single that peaked at #3 on the Oricon singles chart. This track was also featured in a Maxell TV ad for audio cassettes. He is perhaps best known for composing and performing the 1983 song "Christmas Eve," which appeared on his album of the same year and was covered by another artist for their Japanese album release. An English version of the song was written by a frequent collaborator of Yamashita. In addition to his music career, he is a well-known record collector and the DJ of Japan's famous oldies radio show, "Tatsuro Yamashita's Sunday Songbook," which began on October 3, 1992, and continues to this day. His daughter is Minako Yamashita.
