Tatsuro Yamashita is a Japanese singer-songwriter and record producer, born on February 4, 1953, in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, Japan. He is heavily influenced by American jazz, soul, and big band music. His first album, which contained cover versions of songs by The Beach Boys and other golden age American songs, is now extremely rare and sought-after. Yamashita made his major debut in 1976 with an album recorded in New York and Los Angeles, featuring the participation of a conductor and arranger. His popular breakthrough came in 1980 with the release of a single that peaked at #3 on the Oricon singles chart. This song was also featured in a Maxell TV ad for audio cassettes. He is perhaps best known for composing and performing his 1983 song "Christmas Eve," which appeared on his album that year and was notably covered by another artist for their Japanese album release. A version with English lyrics was written by a frequent collaborator of Yamashita's. In addition to his music career, Yamashita is recognized as a record collector and serves as the DJ for Japan's most famous oldies radio show, "Tatsuro Yamashita's Sunday Songbook," which began on October 3, 1992, and has been ongoing since. His daughter is Minako Yamashita.
