Teddy Pendergrass, born Theodore Pendergrass on March 26, 1950, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was an American R&B/soul singer and songwriter. Known by nicknames such as Teddy P, TP, and Teddy Bear, he began his musical career in 1970 as a drummer and gradually became the lead singer of his band. After experiencing personality conflicts with band members, Pendergrass launched a successful solo career, releasing his self-titled LP in 1977. Tragically, on March 18, 1982, Pendergrass was involved in an automobile accident that resulted in a spinal cord injury, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. After announcing his retirement from the music business in 2006, he made a brief return to perform at "Teddy 25: A Celebration of Life, Hope & Possibilities" in 2007, an event that commemorated the anniversary of his accident and raised funds for his charity, The Teddy Pendergrass Alliance, which focuses on providing education and occupational opportunities for individuals with spinal cord injuries. Pendergrass passed away on January 13, 2010.
