**The Temptations** are an iconic American vocal group that achieved remarkable success with Motown Records during the 1960s and 1970s. Known for their distinctive harmonies, choreography, and flashy wardrobe, they played a significant role in the evolution of R&B and soul music. The group was formed in 1960 in Detroit, Michigan, initially under the name The Elgins (distinct from another Motown act with the same name). They changed their name to The Temptations before signing with Motown in 1962. They became the first Motown recording act to win a Grammy Award and, throughout their career, released four Billboard Hot 100 #1 singles and fourteen R&B #1 singles, solidifying their status as one of the most successful groups in music history. The Temptations' lineup has evolved over the years, with current members including Otis Williams, Ron Tyson, Terry Weeks, Tony Grant, and Jawan M. Jackson. The group has seen many changes, with several members having passed away, including original members Elbridge "Al" Bryant, Melvin Franklin, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, David Ruffin, Dennis Edwards, Ricky Owens, Richard Street, Damon Harris, and others. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 as performers.
