Ten City is a Chicago vocal group that gained mainstream recognition during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Initially known as Ragtyme, the trio was formed by vocalist Byron Stingily, guitarist Herb Lawson, and keyboard player Byron Burke, under the guidance of producer Marshall Jefferson. Byron met Marshall at Trax Records after impressing him with his vocals on Dezz 7's "Funny Love." The group recorded several songs together before achieving success with their hit "Devotion." After signing with Atlantic Records in the late '80s, Ten City released their debut album, Foundation, which featured singles like "Right Back to You" and "That's the Way Love Is," both of which were well-received in R&B and dance circles. They followed up with "State of Mind" and "No House Big Enough" in 1990 and 1992, respectively, but were dropped by Atlantic shortly thereafter. Following their contract release, the single "Fantasy," co-written with Masters at Work, enjoyed success in the club scene. However, their fourth album, "That Was Then, This Is Now," did not generate the expected buzz, leading to the group's disbandment. Byron Stingily later pursued a successful solo career. In 2021, Ten City reformed and released their fifth album, Judgement, their first in 27 years, produced remotely during lockdown.
