Terry LaVerne Stafford (November 22, 1941 – March 17, 1996) was an American singer and songwriter known for his distinctive voice reminiscent of Elvis Presley. Born in Hollis, Oklahoma, he grew up in Amarillo, Texas, and graduated from Palo Duro High School in 1960. Stafford moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career, where he achieved significant success with his hit song "Suspicion," which reached #3 on the US charts and #31 in the UK. Released on Crusader Records, "Suspicion" sold over one million copies and was notable for being positioned just below The Beatles on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1964. Stafford's follow-up single, "I'll Touch a Star," peaked at #25 in America. Both hits were produced by Bob Summers, who played all the instruments on the tracks. Stafford continued to record music but did not achieve further chart success. However, his song "Amarillo by Morning," co-written in 1973, was later covered by George Strait and recognized as one of the top country songs of all time. Additionally, Stafford's song "Big in Dallas" was recorded by Buck Owens as "Big in Vegas." Terry Stafford passed away in Amarillo, Texas, due to liver failure.
