**Bio: Test Dept** Test Dept is a group formed in late 1981 in New Cross, southeast London, comprised entirely of unemployed members. Their diverse musical influences range from soul to classical, leading them to create music using scrap metal salvaged from waste grounds and derelict factories, largely due to financial constraints and a disdain for conventional rock instruments. Initially, they experimented with bass guitars and other traditional instruments but soon transitioned to industrial percussion, which provided a stronger and more consistent sound. The group took a conceptual stand against Thatcherism, Totalism, and reactionary forces, notably supporting the Miners' Strike in 1984. They employed unconventional tools that demanded physical and psychological strength from both the audience and performers, and they staged large-scale events under the banner of Test Department Productions, collaborating with various artists on projects like 'The Unacceptable Face Of Freedom' and 'Goddodin.' In 1992, an offshoot named NVA was established in Glasgow, focusing on staged productions, while the remaining core of Test Dept concentrated on music. They parted ways with Some Bizarre in late 1987 with the release of 'A Good Night Out' but retained their Ministry Of Power label, which was later partly distributed by Jungle. In 2015, they released the archive documentary 'Total State Machine' as a book with a CD/DVD. The rights for some of their music can be seen listed on their copyright page.
