The Counts were a Detroit-based soul and funk ensemble active in the 1970s. Initially a sextet, they released their first instrumental LP on Cotillion Records, collaborating with Michigan producer Ollie McLaughlin. By 1973, the group had relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, and signed with Aware Records, releasing two albums: "Love Sign" and "Funk Pump," both of which charted. Their music seamlessly blended jazzy instrumental grooves, characterized by prominent saxophone and organ, with soulful ballads and innovative tracks like "Flies Over Watermelon!" and "The Munchies." In 2009, the original 1976 lineup reunited, featuring Mose Davis on Hammond organ and vocals, Leroy Emmanuel on guitar and vocals, Demo Cates on saxophones and vocals, Jimmy "Junebug" Jackson on drums and vocals, and Jimmy Brown on saxophones and vocals.
