The Nova Local emerged from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1964, initially performing as The Shadows. The band featured vocalist Randy Winburn, guitarists Joe Mendyk and Phil Lambeth, bassist Jim Opton, keyboardist Cam Schinhan, and drummer Bill Levasseur. Their music blended psychedelic pop with elements of folk and blues, as showcased in their sole album, *Nova 1*, released by Decca Records in 1968. The album is notable for being among the first recorded using the Dolby NR system. Their track "If You Only Had the Time" gained renewed attention when sampled in MF Doom's 2005 song "The Mask."
