The 5 A.M. Event was a Canadian/British rock 'n' roll band formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1963. The original members included Glenn MacRae (lead vocals, harmonica, saxophone), a lead guitarist, Dennis Penner (bass guitar, vocals), and a drummer known later as Schmidt. The band relocated to Liverpool, UK, in July 1965, where Penner left after five months and was replaced by Stuart McKiernan, a bassist from Liverpool. In February 1966, they began performing regularly at the Cavern Club. They were later discovered by a promoter who renamed them and organized a recording session in London, resulting in their only single. Pete Clarke briefly took over drumming duties while Schmidt worked with Fruit Eating Bears, but Schmidt re-joined the band shortly before their return to Winnipeg in October 1966. Upon returning to Winnipeg, MacRae, Loeb, and Schmidt were rejoined by Penner, and they re-established themselves as The Crescendos. The group disbanded in August 1967. Following the breakup, Glenn MacRae pursued a successful career with Winnipeg Piano and Long & McQuade while still playing occasionally. Denis Penner left the music industry and moved to Vancouver with his family. Vance and Terry continued with their next project, Clayton Square, until September of that year, when Vance replaced Ron Savoie in another band.
