The 5 Royales were a groundbreaking US R&B group from Winston-Salem, NC, known for their influential blend of gospel, R&B, rock, doo-wop, and soul music. Originally called the Royal Sons Gospel Group, the group consisted of brothers Clarence and Curtis Pauling, who backed their father, Lowman Pauling Sr., during concerts. In the early 1950s, Carolina radio producer Robert Woodward connected them with Apollo Records in New York, leading to their name change to the "5" Royales, a decision made by label representative Carl Le Bowe. The group initially included six members, and the quotes around the "5" acknowledged this fact. The lineup featured guitarist, lead singer Johnny Tanner, tenors James 'Jimmy' Moore and Obadiah "Scoop" Carter, and baritone Otto 'Jeff' Jeffries, who later became the group's manager. Their first single was "Give Me One More Chance" b/w "Too Much of a Little Bit." As the group evolved around 1952, they transitioned from gospel music to incorporate doo-wop, jump blues, rhythm and blues, soul, and gospel. They achieved seven Top Ten R&B hits, including two #1 songs in 1953, "Baby Don't Do It" and "Help Me Somebody."
