The Action were an English band formed in August 1963 in Kentish Town, North West London, originally known as The Boys. They were favored by the mod subculture and played soul music-influenced pop music. The original lineup consisted of Reg King (lead vocals), Alan 'Bam' King (lead guitar, vocals), Mike "Ace" Evans (bass guitar, vocals), and Roger Powell (drums). In 1965, they changed their name to The Action after Peter Watson joined as an additional guitarist. Despite receiving critical acclaim for their single "Land Of A Thousand Dances" b/w "In My Lonely Room," the band struggled commercially, with none of their singles achieving success in the UK Singles Chart. After facing challenges with management, Peter Watson left the band in 1966. The Action continued as a quartet but was dropped from Parlophone in 1967. They later added keyboardist Ian Whiteman and guitarist Martin Stone, shifting towards a mid-tempo psychedelic ballad style and then into folk rock. Reg King departed in 1967, and Alan King took over as the main lead vocalist. In 1969, after signing with John Curd's Head Records, the band was renamed. The Action is notably one of the favorite bands of Phil Collins, who performed with the reunited band in 2000, describing the experience as akin to playing with the Beatles.
