The Action were an English band formed in August 1963 in Kentish Town, North West London, originally known as The Boys. The band's lineup included Reg King (lead vocals), Alan 'Bam' King (lead guitar, vocals), Mike "Ace" Evans (bass guitar, vocals), and Roger Powell (drums). They gained popularity within the mod subculture and played soul music-influenced pop. In 1965, after the addition of guitarist Peter Watson, they changed their name to The Action. Their debut single, "Land Of A Thousand Dances" b/w "In My Lonely Room," received critical acclaim but did not achieve commercial success, and none of their singles made it onto the UK Singles Chart. After a challenging experience with management, Watson left the band in 1966, and they continued as a quartet until being dropped from Parlophone in 1967. In the late 1960s, keyboardist Ian Whiteman and guitarist Martin Stone joined the band, leading them to explore a mid-tempo psychedelic ballad style and later folk rock. Reg King departed in 1967, and Alan King became the main lead vocalist. In 1969, they signed with John Curd's Head Records and were renamed. The Action remains a favorite band of Phil Collins, who performed with them during their reunion in 2000, describing the experience as akin to playing with the Beatles.
