The Afro Blues Quintet Plus One was an American R&B-flavored soul-jazz group founded in 1963 by its leader and vibes player. The six-member band included a saxophonist, a veteran of another prominent band, and a pianist who also played bass, drums, flute, and vibes. The leader had previously played with another notable band. The original drummer went on to become one of the most popular session drummers in pop history. Their classic 1966 self-titled album featured the lineup of the leader on vibes, a musician on alto sax and flute, a pianist, a drummer on timbales and traps, Norman Johnson on bass, and a musician on congas.
