The Ambertones, originally known as The Scepters, formed while the members were attending Roosevelt and Garfield High School in East Los Angeles. Initially playing surf music, they transitioned to performing R&B covers by 1963. The band adopted their new name, The Ambertones, inspired by one member's amber jacket. They played at high school dances and local venues, including the Union Hall, and achieved recognition by winning the first Battle of the Bands at the Hollywood Palladium. The group experienced several member and label changes from 1963 to 1969.
