The Arms of Someone New is a band that formed in 1983 in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, USA. The group originated when Mel Eberle, a member of The First Things, began collaborating with Steve Jones, who was managing and producing that band. Their early music was created in a small apartment in Champaign, leading to the release of their first four songs on the Significant Others cassette through Hysterical Records in December 1983. The band's name was derived from one of the options they considered. With a vision to blend their diverse musical influences, including the Beatles, psychedelia, blues, new wave, and post-punk, Mel and Steve aimed to create an immersive sound experience for listeners. They followed up their debut with another cassette, Occam’s Razor, released two months later, which continued the trajectory set by Significant Others. Their aspirations evolved into the creation of a concept album, culminating in the Notes From Underground cassette, released in Germany on Devils Dandy Dogs in April 1984. This was their final recording for Hysterical Records.
