The Associates were formed in Dundee, Scotland, in 1976. They released a self-funded 7" shortly after a notable artist had released his original work, which led to a publishing deal with Bowie's publishers and a proper record deal. By 1980, they were touring with a prominent band and signed to a record label, for whom they recorded their music. The group later relocated and released a series of singles, compiled on an album recorded with funding from major labels expecting demos. As their drug use increased, their music became more experimental, and ex-The Cure member joined the band. In 1982, The Associates signed with WEA, bringing in a back-up singer. Billy MacKenzie and Alan Rankine achieved a series of UK top 20 hits, and their album made the UK top 10, earning accolades in the music press. However, their drug use peaked, leading to erratic behavior. Just before their biggest UK tour, MacKenzie pulled out, resulting in the loss of a US deal, and Rankine eventually left the group, leading to MacKenzie continuing as a solo artist with various collaborators. MacKenzie began recording a follow-up album, which took three years and cost WEA £250,000. Despite some chart success, WEA was dissatisfied and pressured him for a more straightforward sound.
