They changed their name to The 4 Bees in 1948 and later became known as The Encores by late 1950 to early 1951. In about 1952, they joined the Silas Green traveling tent show, which frequently performed in Canada. In the fall of 1955, they adopted the name The Avalons, with an initial lineup that included Rafael Ingram (tenor), James Dozier (tenor), George Cox (tenor), Charles "Bobby" Crawley (tenor/baritone), and Bernard Purdie (bass).
