The Band was a Canadian-American roots rock group that gradually formed between 1960 and 1964, initially known as The Hawks, a backing band. After parting ways with Ronnie Hawkins in 1964, they briefly adopted a different name before releasing a single in 1965 under another name. In late summer 1965, they were recommended as a backup band for Bob Dylan's first U.S. "electric" tour by blues singer John Hammond. Their sessions with Dylan concluded in October 1967. Although the exact circumstances of how they became known as "The Band" differ in accounts, by 1968, they officially performed as The Band, releasing their first album that year. They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 as performers. The original line-up included: - Rick Danko (1943-1999): bass guitar, double bass, fiddle, trombone, vocals - Levon Helm (1940-2012): drums, mandolin, guitar, vocals - Garth Hudson (1937-2025): keyboard instruments, saxophones, trumpet - Richard Manuel (1943-1986): piano, drums, baritone saxophone, vocals - Robbie Robertson (1943-2013): guitar, vocals.
