Battered Ornaments were an ambitious rock band formed in 1969 by lyricist Pete Brown, who was known for writing many songs for Cream alongside Jack Bruce. The band featured Brown on vocals and trumpet, alongside Graham Layden (vocals), Chris Spedding (guitar), Charlie Hart (organ, violin), George Khan (sax), Butch Potter (bass), Rob Tait (drums), and Pete Bailey (percussion). The group released their debut album, A Meal You Can Shake Hands With in the Dark, before completing a second album titled Mantelpiece. However, Layden was an early casualty of the band, and after a dispute with Spedding, Brown left the group. His vocals on Mantelpiece were subsequently wiped and replaced. Battered Ornaments continued to perform until Spedding departed to pursue a solo career.
