**The Beaux Jens** Formed in March 1966 in Grand Ledge, Michigan, The Beaux Jens were a garage rock band that made their mark until their breakup in July 1968. Known for their original song “She Was Mine,” which gained underground acclaim after being featured on the compilation "Back From The Grave," the band stood out with their haunting organ sounds and sporadic screams. The band members, including organ/coronet player Toby Bates, were just 15 or 16 years old when they started, with Tim Schram serving as the musical leader due to his knowledge of chords. Despite their inexperience, they quickly developed into a solid live act, noted for their energetic performances led by bassist/vocalist Gordy Garris and drummer Joe Panessidi. Bates described their shows as intense and fast-paced, with a focus on the music rather than banter. Balancing school and their musical aspirations, the band enjoyed a strong following in their local high school and competed with rival band Tonto & the Renegades. However, the departure of Garris to join Dick Wagner's band, The Frost, marked the beginning of the end for The Beaux Jens. Attempts to replace him were unsuccessful, leading to the band's dissolution just two months later.
