The Black Beats is a pioneering highlife band from Ghana, formed in 1952 by trumpeter King Bruce (1922-1998) and tenor saxophonist Saka Acquaye. Unlike other Ghanaian bands of the time that focused on instrumental dance music, the Black Beats emphasized vocal performances, creating a successful formula that resonated with audiences despite being composed of part-time musicians. Throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, the band released over 50 78 rpm shellac records on major labels such as His Master’s Voice, Philips/Fontana, Senafone, and Decca, rivaling the popularity of E.T. Mensah and his Tempos Band. In 1961, after nine musicians left to form The Ramblers, King Bruce reorganized a second-generation Black Beats and continued to produce hits for Decca, transitioning from trumpet to alto saxophone. However, in 1968, his civil service career necessitated his withdrawal from public performances, although he remained the manager of the Black Beats and seven other bands.
