The Black Hippies were a Nigerian rock band from Warri, Bendel State, Nigeria, active in the mid-1970s and led by songwriter Joseph Etinagbedia, also known as Pazy. Initially, the band played a distinct style of harder rock that incorporated elements of Nigerian music, characterized by a visceral vocal style and psychedelic funk. Their debut self-titled album, recorded in 1976 by producer Odion Iruoje, features five of the band's early tunes, showcasing funky pre-disco rhythms alongside light-headed fuzz guitar in Pazy's celebratory and somewhat psychedelic compositions. Although the band later shifted towards reggae in their subsequent releases, their debut album captures a unique and inspired beginning for their hard rock sound.
