The Blue Aeroplanes are an English indie rock band formed in 1981 in Bristol by brothers Gerard and John, along with dancer Wojtek, who were previously members of a short-lived punk band. The band's name is derived from the Polish phrase "Niebieske Samoloty," which was initially intended to be the name of Wojtek's brother's band. Known for their ever-changing lineup, as of 2016, the band has included 41 ex-members, a record only surpassed by a few. Gerard, John, and Wojtek have remained the core members since the band's inception, although John left between 1990 and 2004 to play drums for another band during that time. Former and current members have gone on to join various other bands. The Blue Aeroplanes typically conclude their live performances with "Breaking In My Heart," often featuring multiple guest guitarists on stage playing the main riff. Notably, during the early 1990s, when they were tour support, they had a total of 15 guitarists playing simultaneously. Additionally, it is said that R.E.M.'s famous song "Losing My Religion" was inspired by Gerard.
