The Bobbettes, originally known as "The Harlem Queens," were an R&B girl group from New York formed in 1955. In 1957, they changed their name to "The Bobbettes" at the request of their new label, Atlantic Records. Under Atlantic, they were pressured to alter their first hit, "Mr. Lee," transforming it from a song expressing their disdain for their school principal into one of endearment. After experiencing a series of unsuccessful releases, The Bobbettes were released from Atlantic and returned to their original, grittier style influenced by their upbringing in the playgrounds and projects. In 1960, they released "I Shot Mr. Lee," which revealed their true feelings about their principal. The following year, they produced "I Don't Like It Like-That," a response to Chris Kenner's "I Like It Like That."
