The Body Electric was one of the first electronic bands in New Zealand, formed in 1982 by Alan Jimson and another member. During their initial rehearsals, they were joined by actor-turned-singer. The group's debut single, "Pulsing," gained popularity among radio programmers, spending 27 weeks in the charts, although it had a novelty quality that was not entirely representative of their overall sound. After the release of "Pulsing," Andy Drey was replaced by bassist, and the band went on to release two more singles, "Dreaming In A Life" and "Imagination," as well as a full-length album before disbanding in 1984. Following the split, Jansson pursued a career in record production in Auckland, while Smith became the manager of The New Zealand Ballet Company.
