The Bongo Hop is the alias of trumpeter and composer Etienne Sevet. Originating in Cali, Colombia, in 2011, Sevet began his musical journey as a self-taught musician after years of working as a music journalist, DJ, promoter, and university teacher, focusing on unearthing Afro-Colombian folkloric traditions. He learned to play the trumpet in 2010 and, upon arriving in Europe with a series of compositions, collaborated with producer Patchworks to produce his first two albums. His discography includes three critically acclaimed albums: Satingarona pt 1 (2016), Satingarona pt 2 (2019), and La ñapa (2022), which received recognition from various media outlets including France Inter, BBC6, and NPR. As a live performer, The Bongo Hop leads an 8-piece Afropean and Latino band featuring artists such as Nidia Gongora and Laurene Pierre Magnani on lead vocals, Setounkpatin Gnanho on drums, Jean Tchoumi on bass, Mario Vargas on percussion, Felix Marret on keyboards, Luisa Caceres on saxophone, and Riad Klai or Quentin Langlois on guitar.
