The Brkn Record is a Black consciousness project led by Jake Ferguson, co-founder and bass player of the UK's foundational deep jazz outfit, the Heliocentrics. Alongside fellow co-founder and legendary drummer Malcolm Catto, Ferguson has collaborated with globally recognized artists such as Archie Shepp, Mulatu Astatke, Melvin Van Peebles, and Orlando Julius. The Brkn Record features contributions from artists including Zara McFarlane, Ugochi Nwaogwugwu, Lee Jasper, Jermain Jackman, Yolanda Lear, and Leroy Logan MBE. The project combines poetry with jazz, drawing on influences from library music, psychedelic soul, music concrete, spiritual jazz, classical, and alt rock. The Architecture of Oppression Part 1 is described as a “committed, collaborative response to local and global systems of anti-Black racism and state violence.”
