The Bulgarian State Radio & Television Female Vocal Choir was formed in 1951 under the direction of Philip Koutev. Originally known for their contributions to a series of LPs released by 4AD starting in 1975, they gained significant recognition through the album "Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares," which featured their recordings but did not credit the choir, leading to some confusion about the name. Subsequent volumes of the series included recordings from the choir, credited as such, along with other folk groups. The success of these albums prompted the choir to tour, and in the 1990s, a "super group" comprised of choir members and other folk groups performed under the name "Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares" or "The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices," led by Dora Hristova. This ensemble produced several recordings, including "Ritual," "Bulgarian Custom Songs," and live albums such as "A Concert in the Cathedral" and "Melody Rhythm and Harmony."
