The Cadillacs were a US doo-wop group from Harlem, New York, active between 1953 and 1962. Originally known as "The Carnations," the group consisted of members Earl Carroll (lead vocalist), Bobby Phillips, Lavern Drake (bass vocalist), Gus Willingham, and James "Poppa" Clark. Later members included Earl Wade and Charles Brooks. In 1957, the group split into two factions. One group was initially known as "The Four Cadillacs," featuring current bass J. R. Bailey, former bass Lavern Drake, and new members Roland Martinez and Bobby Spencer. This faction also included former saxophonist Jesse "Tex" Powell and recorded in early 1958 as "Jesse Powell and the Caddys." The other faction, consisting of Carroll, Wade, Brooks, and Phillips, continued to record separately as Earl Carroll and the Cadillacs. By late 1958, the two groups reunited. However, Carroll's backup vocalists—Wade, Brooks, and Phillips—decided to retire, leading Carroll to join Bailey, Drake, Martinez, and Spencer. Carroll's lead role was taken over by Spencer and Bailey, and he left shortly thereafter to form a new group, which recorded briefly in 1959. The Cadillacs were revived in the early 1990s with Bobby Phillips, Steven Brown, Gary K. Lewis, and musical director Eddie Jones. Brown left in 2003,
