The Call was formed in Santa Cruz in 1980 by vocalist and guitarist Michael Been, drummer and percussionist Scott Musick, bassist Greg Freeman, and guitarist Tom Ferrier. The band gained recognition for their music until the tragic passing of Michael Been on August 19, 2010, due to a heart attack he suffered backstage at the Pukkelpop music festival in Hasselt, Belgium, where he was working as a sound engineer for his son's band.
