The Caravelles were a female duo from London, England, consisting of Lois Wilkinson and Andrea Simpson. Their peak recording period spanned from 1963 to 1968. Initially co-workers who entertained at office parties and amateur shows, they were encouraged by their colleagues to record a song. They created a demo of "You Don't Have To Be A Baby To Cry," which they found on the back of Tennessee Ernie Ford's "Sixteen Tons." Naming themselves after the French airliner, they caught the attention of B. P. R. Records, who re-recorded the song in a professional studio. It became a significant hit in the United Kingdom and was later picked up by Smash Records for North American distribution, reaching #3 on the Billboard charts on December 21, 1963. After Wilkinson left the group to pursue a solo career, she was replaced by other singers, most notably Lynne Hamilton, who achieved a hit in Australia in 1979 and again in England in 1989 with "On The Inside," the theme from the Australian TV drama "Prisoner."
