The Caretaker is a musical project conceived in 1999 by James Kirby as a side project to V/Vm. It became the longest-running and best-known of his various acts, continuing well beyond V/Vm's official end in 2008. The project draws inspiration from a scene in Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation of "The Shining" and primarily utilizes 78 RPM singles of ballroom recordings, applying minimal effects in contrast to V/Vm's more aggressive style. Over time, The Caretaker began to delve into the theme of neurodegenerative illness, using the records as a metaphor for the gradual decline of the human mind. This exploration culminated in the six-part series "Everywhere At The End of Time," which presents a fictional first-person narrative of early onset dementia through surface noise, atmospherics, and snippets of worn-out records. After two decades, The Caretaker concluded with the final installment of "Everywhere..." in 2019, while Kirby continues to produce music under his other ongoing projects.
