The Cars were an American New Wave rock group formed in 1976 in Boston, Massachusetts. They released their first single and album in 1978, initially presenting a guitar-driven rock sound complemented by progressive keyboard elements. However, they quickly transitioned to a heavily synth-based pop-rock style. The band disbanded in 1988 after achieving significant success, including multiple platinum albums and Top 40 singles. The original lineup included Ric Ocasek (vocals, guitar), Benjamin Orr (vocals, bass), Elliot Easton (guitar), Greg Hawkes (keyboards, sax, guitar), and David Robinson (drums). In 2006, Greg Hawkes and Elliot Easton, alongside members of Utopia and The Tubes, formed The New Cars, performing primarily original material from The Cars. In 2011, The Cars, now without Benjamin Orr who had passed away in 2000, released a new album and toured with Greg Hawkes taking over on bass and Ric Ocasek as the sole lead singer. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018 and reunited to perform at the ceremony. Ric Ocasek passed away on September 15, 2019.
