The Champs were a musical group originally formed around the hit song "Tequila," which was recorded by a lineup of studio musicians including Dave Burgess, Danny Flores, Buddy Bruce, Cliff Hills, and Gene Alden. The song was quickly recorded as a B-side during a session for Jerry Wallace, but it became a massive hit, leading to the formation of the band named after Gene Autry’s horse. Over the next four years, the Champs, despite numerous personnel changes, achieved three additional top 40 hits and four minor chart singles.
